Toshiba Machine: Low Cost SCARA robots

New SCARA models THL300 and THL400: Bisection of weight and energy consumption

The Toshiba Machine THL series will be extended with two new SCARA models. In addition to the well know SCARAs THL500, THL600 and THL700 the models THL300 and THL400 with arm length of 300 and 400mm will be available from now on. Development target of the new THL series was decrease of production and operation costs. Result: THL range is up to 50% lighter than other Toshiba Machine models and the robots consume 50% less electricity.

Toshiba Machine has developed a new range of SCARA robots that set new benchmarks for price, performance, mass and low energy consumption. Performance compares favorably with other models and the new robots feature easier maintenance than previously. The benefit to end users, apart from price, is that the new THL robots can be installed with cheaper, less robust supports with significantly less need for vibration suppression – a major advantage for systems integrators. Much of the reduction in mass is thanks to the use of lightweight cast aluminium mechanical components that have a series of ribbed sections to provide the rigidity required. As a result of building the body and arm of the robot in this manner, smaller servo motors have been fitted. Moreover, because the lightweight system generates substantially less inertia, and reduced demand for continuous position adjustments, a simplified gearbox has been able to be used.

The THL range is now available with arm length from 300 up to 700mm. Payload from 5kg (THL300 and THL400) and 10 kg for the bigger models ensure that the THL series is more than competitive. Cycle time less than 0,50s (by using 2kg payload) and accuracy of 0,01mm show the strong capability of these robots.

To suit the European markets, the THL robots are controlled by the proven and popular TS3000E controller. Equipped with 64 I/O as standard, but expandable up to 166, the TS3000E controller satisfies even the most demanding production line or manufacturing cell requirements. To achieve the new CE standards (safety category 3) valid from January 2013 the controller will be equipped with an external safety relay box.

In Germany the new THL series will be available exclusively from the longtime Toshiba partner esco Antriebstechnik gmbh in Troisdorf.
